Finless Foods Invites Plant-Based Poke Bowls to the Table
Poke is the perfect dish for those who love the delicious flavor and beautiful presentation of sushi with the ease and convenience of a grain bowl.
A beloved Hawaiian recipe that highlights the island’s bounty of fresh tuna and Japanese culinary influence, poke has popped up on menus around the country as a healthy, nutritious option. In developing their plant-based tuna, set to launch in mid-2022, Finless Foods has sought to close the consumer gap by offering a choice for every type of palate that also supports a healthy, thriving ocean.
Finless Foods’ plant-based tuna side-steps the negative repercussions of overfishing for an environmentally friendly, consumer-inclusive solution to a complex problem. Tuna populations have declined by 60% over the last 50 years, and one-third of tuna stocks are being fished at unsustainable levels. None of this has to be the case, according to Chief Strategy Officer Shannon Cosentino-Roush—a well-known expert in the bluefin tuna and ocean policy sectors.
“Finless started with bluefin tuna as its first species because of the historic decline of the global stocks and ever-increasing demand for these highly-prized fish,” she says.
Beyond conservation efforts around the oceans themselves, Finless Foods is also committed to respecting the fishing industry as a whole, including groups that focus on safety and sustainability. The company hopes to support current infrastructures by offering viable alternatives, while not feeling any need to replace traditional fishing. It’s about including healthy, great-tasting options for everyone.
Now about that poke. How do you make it using Finless Foods’ plant-based tuna? “The feedback received from our culinary partners has been phenomenal, likening the flavor and texture to sushi-grade tuna,” says Finless Foods’ CEO and Co-Founder Michael Selden. This makes it a wonderful canvas for traditional seasonings like soy sauce, sesame oil, and onions, shallots, or scallions (with none of the negative environmental impact).
So dig into the culinary delight that is tuna poke—thanks to Finless Foods, everyone can say “aloha” to this tantalizing treat. And then “aloha” again, as it disappears from your bowl.
